WHAT WE DO

Our practice specialty is minimally invasive surgery which includes advanced laparoscopic surgery, operative endoscopy, surgical oncology, bariatric surgery and executive health checkups.

Surgical Practice

Our philosophy is prevaricated on the premise that one can safely practice advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery in a developing country. 

Laparoscopic surgery is a sub specialization of surgery which entails the use of an assortment of small instruments and fibre optics. This modern form of surgery is now offered at a few specialized medical centres such as AVLSC. Most of our patients go home within 28 hours of surgery.

We also combine our personal experience and knowledge with consultative advice from other physicians to devise a treatment plan for each patient. We operate and care for our patients at AVLSC Lagos & Abuja, both facilities have inpatient facilities but we also travel, teach, mentor and perform free/charity procedures and conduct cancer awareness programmes around the continent. A great focus is on the practice of modern medicine in Africa. 

Appendicitis is managed by single incision double trocar laparoscopic appendectomy, the scar in invisible as it is hidden in the umbilicus (belly button).

Adhesions are managed by laparoscopic adhesiolysis and application of an adhesion barrier.

Breast cancer in the early stages are offered breast conserving wide local excisions and sentinel lymph node biopsies. Various forms of mastectomy, chemotherapy and reconstruction are also undertaken here.

Groshong, Hickman, Broviac and low profile subcutaneous catheters and ports are placed for chemotherapy.

Endoscopies include esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, hysteroscopy, cystoscopy and bronchoscopy.

Early colon cancer and polyps are managed by snare polypectomy. Later stages undergo stapled anastomosis after resection.

Laparoscopy is a major part of Minimally Invasive Surgery which involves making much smaller incisions for the same surgical operations that have been performed for centuries. 

The days when the surgeon made big incisions to accommodate his/her hands in the abdomen/thorax/pelvis are now numbered. 

We employ the marvels of modern science in the form of a laparoscope which is a small tube-like device with lenses like a telescope to magnify body structures, a powerful light to illuminate them and a miniature video camera at its tip. 

Exceptionally clear images are now transmitted through a fibre optic cable to a TV-like monitor with magnification much better than the naked eye.

The surgeon actually sees much better with small incision laparoscopy than with large incision naked eye open procedures because of the magnification. 

The entire surgical procedure is easily recorded on a simple video tape which can easily be burned down to a DVD. Similar small straw-sized laparoscopic instruments are used for cutting, suturing, coagulating, irrigating, ultrasound and much more.
